Why curtains
The darkest, softest way to stop the light.
Blockout curtains (you might know them as blackout or room darkening curtains) are made from a dense blockout fabric that stops the light. Hung from a ceiling track, down to the floor and past the window on both sides, they leave light very few gaps to get through — which makes them the darkest option we fit.
They also do things a blind can’t: they soften the room, help hold the warmth in on cold nights and take the edge off street noise. Open, they stack neatly at the sides; closed, the room is dark and fully private.

The fabric stops the light. How dark the room gets depends on how they’re hung: ceiling-mounted, floor-length curtains that run past the window on both sides are the darkest. A little light can still show where the curtains meet or at the very top. We show you what to expect at the measure.
None. Blockout is the Australian name and blackout the American one. You’ll also see them called room darkening curtains or blockout drapes. They’re all curtains made from a fabric that stops the light.
No. The blockout comes from the coating or backing on the fabric, not its colour, so white, cream and light grey blockouts stop light just as well as charcoal and black.
Yes. The dense, coated blockout fabric works as a thermal curtain: it stops the sun’s heat at the window in summer, and a full-length curtain hung ceiling to floor helps hold the warmth in through winter.
