What they are

Two curtains. Two tracks. One window.

Double curtains are two curtains on the same window: a light sheer and a heavier blockout, each on its own track. They open and close separately, so you choose how much light and privacy you want at any time of day.

Close the sheer in the morning and the room fills with soft light, without anyone seeing straight in. At night, draw the blockout across and the room goes dark and fully private. On a nice day, open both and the whole window is clear.

  • A sheer and a blockout, each on its own track
  • Soft light and privacy by day, darkness at night
  • An extra layer of fabric for warmth and quiet
  • Made to measure in S-fold, on a ceiling or wall track

How it works

One window, three ways

Each curtain moves on its own, so the same window does three different jobs.

DaySheer closedSoft, even daylight and privacy from the street. The blockout waits at the sides.
NightBlockout closedDark enough to sleep in, and fully private once the lights are on.
AnytimeBoth openBoth curtains stack neatly at the sides and the whole window is clear.

Same room, day and night

Drag from day to night.

Here is one dining room shown both ways: the sheer closed for the day, then the blockout closed for the night. Same window, same track, two completely different rooms.

  • SheerBy day: soft light, the view kept, privacy from outside.
  • BlockoutAt night: a dark, private room, with the heat and noise held back.

Things to decide

Four choices, and we help with all of them

Your two fabrics

Choose the sheer and the blockout together so the colours work open and closed. We bring both to your home.

Ceiling or wall track

A ceiling or recessed track gives the cleanest, tallest look. A wall track suits windows with a cornice or bulkhead.

Which one sits in front

Sheer in front shows the soft sheer all day. Blockout in front shows the blockout fabric when it’s open. Your choice.

By hand or motorised

Draw them by hand, or motorise one or both tracks and use a remote, a wall switch or an app.

Common questions

Double curtains — your questions answered

Straight answers before you book.

Two curtains on one window, each on its own track: usually a sheer and a blockout. You use the sheer by day for soft light and privacy, and the blockout at night for darkness.

Yes. They hang on a double track, or two tracks side by side, fixed to the ceiling or the wall, so each curtain opens and closes on its own.

Either way works. With the sheer in front, the room always shows the soft sheer and the blockout tucks in behind it. With the blockout in front, you see the blockout fabric when both are open. We set it up the way you prefer.

Yes. You can motorise one track or both. Each motorised track has its own motor, and you can run them from a remote, a wall switch or an app, including Amazon Alexa and Google Home. See motorised curtains.

Both work. A blockout roller blind with a sheer curtain in front is neat and usually costs a little less. Double curtains are softer and fuller, and darker when hung from ceiling to floor. We can show you both at the measure.

Usually 2–3 weeks from your free in-home measure to installation. We confirm the timing for your order when we visit.

It depends on the fabric you choose. Some can be gently washed and others are dry-clean only. We give you care instructions with every order.
